This Month's Meeting:

We will be meeting at the Richmond Heights center at 7 pm.

The meeting agenda will include tasting the gold medal winning wines from the annual wine competition and a discussion on the recent grape freezing conditions.

I have included some information in this newsletter for various other wine and grape related organizations.  Please let me know if you like having this stuff included.

Message from our MWS Annual Wine Competition Chairman, Keith Burns-

Congratulations to the following club members for winning a Gold medal in this year's wine fair.  Please bring 2 bottles of your Gold Medal wine to the club meeting this Thursday (4-19), 7:00pm start at "The Heights".   Also bring your cellar notes so that you can describe how the wine was made as club members taste your wine.

I am a member of the Missouri Grape Grower’s Association as are a number of our members.  Here is some info on the recent events with this organization for those interested.

News from the Missouri Grape Grower’s Association (MGGA)

Mark your calendars now.  Viticulture Field Day will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2007 in Purdy, MO.  Gene Cowherd has graciously agreed to host the afternoon session of the Field Day to allow members to see the experimental plots being taken care of on his property.  The day will begin at 8:30am with registration and should wrap up around 3:30 – 4:00pm.

Directions and further information, i.e. hotels, speakers, agenda, etc., will follow.

We will be moving the Field Day to different regions of Missouri every year.  That way, members will have an opportunity to see what is being done in other areas of the state.

Attached are the meeting minutes from our annual meeting at Tan-Tar-A Resort last February.  Please advise of any additions, corrections, and/or deletions at your convenience.

Looking forward to seeing you in June at the Viticulture Field Day!!

Some notes on this past month’s cold weather from the Missouri Wine and Grape Board:

During this difficult time we wish to extend our concern and support to all suffering from this devastating grape loss.  Media coverage of this event has been extensive; however we would like to personally convey the activities of our office.

Currently Keith and Andy are surveying the situation throughout the state.  Once a determination of loss percentage has been reached, that information will be presented to the Board.  The Board can then ask the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control to make an exception this year to allow winemakers to bring grapes and juice from outside the state equal to the damage percent.

In addition we are working with other state associations to provide internet links for growers throughout the US.  This will serve as a means of communication to other regions and areas for locating growers that may excess fruit.  This information will be posted on the Missouri Wine and Grape Board and Missouri Grape Growers website site in the weeks to come.

In addition, Keith and Andy will be addressing vine health and recovery from freeze damage during the BMP Project tailgate meetings throughout the season.  The schedule and locations for tailgate meetings can be found on the ICCVE website:  http://iccve.missouri.edu.

Our goal is to support the industry during this historical event.  Thank you for your patience during this time of assessment and strategic planning.

Sincerely,

Jim Anderson, Executive Director

Missouri Wine & Grape Board
